VIETNAMESE PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION CALLS ON DR. SATYANARAYAN JATIYA


A high level Vietnamese Parliamentary Delegation headed by Ms. Nguyen Thai Hoai Thau, Chairwomen, Committee for Social Affairs National Assembly of Vietnam, called on the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Satyanarayan Jatiya here this evening to share experiences and on social development in the two countries.. The two leaders had exchange of views on wide raging issues including social engineering, education, employment generation, poverty alleviation and prevention of drug abuse. Dr. Jatiya apprised the visiting delegation of the efforts being made by the Government of India for social and economic empowerment of those sections of society which have been left behind due to historical reasons. He said that about 2 million scholarships are granted each year to students belonging to weaker sections to promote education among them. Dr. Jatiya told the Delegation that Centre also provides cent percent assistance to State Governments for arranging remedial and special coaching to remove educational deficiencies of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and minorities. This is to help them in competing on equal footing for admission to higher and professional courses and for entry into quality job market. Both leaders said that their countries have embarked on universalisation of primary education.

Dr. Jatiya said that his Ministry is engaged in the social and economic development of the disadvantaged and marginalised sections in order to make them self-reliant and build self-esteem among them. Special mechanisms and schemes have been evolved to promote their economic welfare. He said that special schemes have been started for employment generation among women.

The Minister said that a strong involvement of NGOs and Self-Help Groups has been encouraged to ensure greater participation of people in schemes and programmes at the grass roots level. Dr. Jatiya said that another important area is to promote full participation and equality for physically challenged people. Making available aids and appliances to them and also making surrounding society accessible and usable does this.

Both leaders said that drug addiction has over the years becoming an area of concern in their respective countries and wanted to share each others experience in prevention of drug abuse.

The Vietnamese delegation is visiting India at the invitation of the Indian Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (IAPPD). Ms. Nguyen Thai Hoai Thau holds the rank of a senior Minister in the Vietnamese government. The Meeting was attended by the Social Justice and Empowerment Secretary, Shri B.S.Baswan and other senior officials of the Ministry.
