KONKAN RAILWAY ACCIDENT CAUSED
BY OBSTRUCTION ON TRACK
Provisional
finding of the Preliminary Report of a statutory inquiry into
the derailment of 904 up Karwar-Mumbai Central Holiday Special,
which occurred at 9.30 p.m. on June 22, 2003 between Vaibhavwadi
and Rajapur Road stations of Konkan Railway, has revealed that
the accident was caused due to failure of right side slope of
cutting resulting in obstruction on track.
As a result of the
accident, 52 passengers lost their lives, 15 passengers suffered
grievous injuries and 10 simple injuries.
The Commissioner
has advised Konkan Railway to continue preventive measures such
as speed restrictions in cuttings deeper than 12 metres, local
patrolling, and slowing down of trains during heavy rain.
