NATIONAL SEMINAR ON WATER FOR NCT, DELHI BEGINS TOMORROW

One day Seminar on Water for National Capital Territory (NCT), Delhi begins here tomorrow organised by Indian Association of Hydrologists (IAH), Delhi Regional centre and sponsored by Ministry of Water Resources to focus on very important issue of life in the NCT, Delhi and it will be attended by decision makers, experts and NGOs, individuals/organisations and sponsors. IAH is an organisation that aims at advancing the study of Hydrology and allied subjects to promote their application in planning and development of Water Resources sector and disseminating the knowledge and application in the field.

Delhi water supply not only suffers from deficiency but also suffers from the problem of uneven distribution, large-scale undetected leakges, pilferage and poor maintenance of the system and ignorance of the people about value of water. Every year especially during summers, much hue and cry is raised about water crises in Delhi and often it transforms into more of a crisis management, having socio-political and economical dimensions, rather than attempting towards a holistic sustainable solution. Long-term solutions lie not only in construction of a new infrastructure, but also, in concurrent implementation of demand management and conservation practices, in development of appropriate strategies and regulatory framework and in transformation of existing institutions to become increasingly more efficient.

With a view to put water situation in Delhi under microscopic examination and evolve an integrated and concerted approach towards sustained water management in Delhi, IAH, Delhi Regional Centre is organising this seminar with the objectives to sensitize the decision makers and bring various experts and NGOs on one platform. Further, it is to discuss the various aspects of water management in the NCT, Delhi and evolve long-term sustainable solutions to fulfil water needs of NCR, this Seminar would go a long way to mitigate the hardship of the water users.

The Seminar will be inaugurated by Shri Arjun Charan Sethi, Union Minister for Water Resources and will be attended by Secretary, MOWR, Chairman, CWC, and CEO, Delhi Jal Board.
