INDIA’S EXPORTS CROSS THE $ 50 BILLION MILESTONE

EXPORTS REACH $ 51.7 BILLION IN 2002-2003

EXPORT GROWTH RATE AT 18.05% SURPASSES THE TARGET OF 12%

INDIA’S FOREIGN TRADE DATA: APRIL-MARCH 2002-03


India’s exports during April-March, 2002-2003 are valued at US $ 51702.22 million (US $ 51.7 billion) which is 18.05% higher than the level of US $ 43795.53 million (US $ 43.7 billion) during April-March, 2001-2002. In rupee terms, the exports were Rs. 250130.02 crore, during April-March, 2002-2003 which is 19.67% higher than the value of exports during April-March, 2001-2002.

Exports during March, 2003 are valued at US $ 4773.63 million which is 15.28% higher than the level of US $ 4140.95 million during March, 2002. In rupee terms, the exports were Rs. 22741.32 crore, which is 12.68% higher than the value of exports during March, 2002.

India’s imports during April-March, 2002-2003 are valued at US $ 59386.78 million ( US $ 59.3 billion) representing an increase of 17.03% over the level of imports valued at US $ 50745.81 million (US $ 50.7 billion) in April-March, 2001-2002. In Rupee terms the imports increased by 18.76% during April-March, 2002-2003.

Oil imports during April-March, 2002-2003 are valued at US $ 17768.77 million which is 26.77% higher than oil imports valued at US $ 14016.37 million in the corresponding period of last year. Non-oil imports during April-March, 2002-2003 are estimated at US $ 41618.01 million which is 13.31% higher than the level of such imports valued at US $ 36729.44 million in April-March, 2001-2002.

Imports during March, 2003 are valued at US $ 5548.26 million registering an increase of 25.16% over the level of imports valued at US $ 4432.86 million in March, 2002. In Rupee terms the imports increased by 22.34% during March, 2002-2003.

The trade deficit for April-March, 2002-2003 is estimated at US $ 7684.56 million which is higher than the deficit at US $ 6950.28 million during April-March, 2001-2002.

Tables giving details of exports, imports and trade balance, according to the provisional estimates of Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence & Statistics (DGCI&S), are attached.
