ARUN JAITLEY TO ATTEND OECD MEET
Shri Arun Jaitley, Union Minister
of Commerce & Industry and Law & Justice, is scheduled
to attend the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting to be held in Paris
on 29 and 30th April, 2003. The Minister is due to
address two Sessions with non-member countries who are invited
by the OECD – namely, the Session at a working dinner on "Sharing
in the Games: Promoting Growth and Investment in Developing Countries"
on 29th April and on "Trade Issues" on 30th
April, 2003. Shri Jaitley’s predecessor, Shri Murasoli Maran
had also participated in such Sessions of the OECD Ministerial
Meeting, to which some non-member countries including India are
invited.
The OECD (Organisation for
Economic Cooperation and Development) Meetings at the Ministerial
level take place every year at the OECD Headquarters in Paris.
This year, the focus of discussion among the OECD countries is
on policies to foster long-term growth as "the current cyclical
downturn has afflicted virtually all OECD countries…. the immediate
policy focus has been to reignite demand". The 20-member OECD
includes the following developed countries: Sweden, Japan, Switzerland,
United States, Germany, Finland, France, United Kingdom, Netherlands,
Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Australia, Canada, Austria, Ireland,
Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece.
