SUBSIDY ON STEEL PRODUCTION

RAJYA SABHA

In several steel producing countries of the world like USA, UK, Australia, France and Greece, specific as well as generic subsidies on steel production are provided. In accordance with the provisions of Article 25 of the Agreement on subsidies and countervailing measures, WTO member countries are required to notify any specific subsidy granted or maintained in their territory. Certain countries have notified subsidies granted or maintained in their territories to the WTO. However, these notifications are not adequately detailed to provide information on the total amount of subsidies being provided by various countries on steel production. There is no obligation on the WTO member countries to notify the non-specific subsidies.

This information was given by the Minister for Steel, Shri Braja Kishore Tripathy in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
