3616 ANCIENT MONUMENTS UNDER ASI
PROTECTION
Archaeological Survey
of India (ASI), protects 3616 ancient monuments and archaeological
sites situated in different parts of the country. These monuments
are selected on the basis of historical, aesthetic and archaeological
importance. This was informed by the Minister for Tourism and
Culture, Shri Jagmohan in a reply to a question by S/Shri Ramsheth
Thakur, A. Venkatesh Naik and Ashok N. Mohol in Lok Sabha today.
Shri Jagmohan further
informed that regular archaeological survey is carried out to
identify potential heritage sites for central protection.
