AMBITIOUS PLAN TO STRENGTHEN THE LABOUR STATISTICAL SYSTEM IN THE COUNTRY DURING THE 10TH PLAN


There is an ambitious plan to strengthen the labour statistical system in the country during the 10th plan. A new scheme namely, "Improvenent in Labour and Employment Statistical Syestem" with a substantial outlay of Rs. 99.50 crore has been included in the 10th Plan. The scheme will enable collection and maintenance of comprehensive data on employment, unemployment, wages and would quicken the pace of processing and dissemination of data through specially designed website of Labour Bureau and other IT assisted methods.

The Consumer Price Index for industrial workers which determines the dearness allowance of workers, government employees etc. is presently being compiled with a two-decade old base 1982. To update the base year, main survey for collection of income and expenditure data from all the 78 selected centres, tabulation of data have been completed and field work for Repeat House Rent Survey is in progress. The new series is expected to be available by mid 2003.
