SUBMARINE CABLE LANDING STATION

Lok Sabha

Government has decided to permit setting up of International Gateways in security sensitive areas including Submarine Cable Landing Stations. This includes the coastal areas of Gujarat also.

Gujarat Government has asked the Communications Ministry to remove restrictions on setting up of Submarine Cable Landing Stations in coastal areas. It had urged the Communications Ministry that in the interest of the economic development of the State, the guidelines issued by the Ministry in the year 2000 regarding International Gateways for Internet using Submarine Cable medium may be reconsidered. As per Clause 13 of the guidelines for setting up of Submarine Cable Landing Stations for International Gateways for Internet, setting up of landing stations was not permitted in security sensitive areas including coastal areas of Gujarat. However, setting up of Submarine Cable Landing Station for International Gateway for Internet will be subject to setting up of appropriate monitoring equipment by Security Agencies and appropriate charges to be paid by the licensee towards monitoring equipment or setting up of monitoring equipment.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Smt. Sumitra Mahajan in a written reply to a question by Shri Savshibhai Makwana in the Lok Sabha today.
