COPPER PRODUCTION IN INDIA

Installed capacity of primary copper in the country was 3.47 lakh tonnes in 2001-02. The total production was 3.36 lakh tonnes with a capacity utilization of 96.70 per cent. During 2000-01 the country produced 2.628 lakh tonnes of copper utilising 106 per cent of its installed capacity of 2.47 lakh tonnes. The demand for copper in the country is being fully met by indigenous production.

Copper is being exported to 159 countries in the last three years. The major countries are USA, UK, Germany, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, China, Taiwan, Malaysia and UAE. During 2001-02 the country earned 208.7 million US dollars as against 164 million US dollars in 2000-01 from copper export.
