INTERNET TICKETING SYSTEM TO BE EXTENDED TO AGRA
The Ministry of Railways
has decided to extend Internet Ticketing System (ITS) to Agra,
the City of Taj, from April 11, 2003.
Reservation on
Internet has been started with the assistance of Indian Railway
Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). This project has commenced
in Delhi from August 3, 2002 and since extended to 15 major cities
thereafter. These are Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad,
Secunderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Nagpur, Chandigarh, Jaipur,
Lucknow, Kanpur and National Capital Region (NCR).
With the introduction
of ITS, passengers need not go to the Railway reservation counter
to purchase the tickets. Tickets can be home delivered by courier
in any of the 15 cities or can be picked up in New Delhi.
The Railways
have planned to introduce ITS in other important cities as well
with the growing popularity of the system.
The ITS is intended
to decongest serpentine queue at Passenger Reservation System
(PRS).
At present, about
2000 reserved tickets are being issued daily under ITS through
the Internet.
