COUNSELING BOARD CONSTITUTED FOR
ENGINEERING EXAMS
A Central Counseling
Board (CCB) has been constituted for examinees who appear for
the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). The CCB
held its first meeting on 11th March, 2003 and finalised
a highly interactive, counselee friendly and transparent system
for counseling. A novel feature of the new system includes use
of internet for multiple exercise of choices by candidates in
consultation with their parents and guides. The counseling will
be conducted throughout the country, at a large number of strategically
located National Institutes of Technology and Deemed Universities.
National Information Centre (NIC), Government of India in association
with Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad
will develop a highly sophisticated and interactive software for
this counseling. NIC will also provide high bandwidth connectivity
to conduct on-line counseling.
The Government of
India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, had constituted
an expert group under the Chairmanship of Prof. M. P. Kapoor,
Ex-Director, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala
to recommend measures for a counseling procedure which is transparent,
trustworthy and easy to follow. The CCB is being chaired by Prof.
I. C. Agarwal, Director, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology,
Allahabad with representatives from UGC, AICTE, CBSE, Director
of IIIT, Hyderabad and Vice-Chancellor, BIT, Ranchi.
A meeting of all
participating institutions and the members of the CCB was held
here on Friday, in which 24 institutions including National Institutes
of Technology, Regional Engineering Colleges, Deemed universities,
IIITs at Allahabad, Gwalior and Hyderabad. The newly developed
interactive model was discussed.
The Ministry of HRD
had initiated an AIEEE in 2002 to minimize the trauma being experienced
by the candidates and their parents arising due to a large number
of entrance examinations being conducted for admission to undergraduate
degree courses in Engineering and Technology, Pharmacy and Architecture.
This initiative has been accepted widely as is evident from the
fact that the number of applicants at 3,27,000 for AIEEE-2003
is more than twice the number in 2002. The whole process of admission,
including issue of seat allotment letter would be completed in
the 2nd week of July, 2003 and it is expected that
academic session 2003-2004 will commence from 3rd week
of July as is the case for Indian Institutes of Technology. To
facilitate dissemination of information in this regard, a website
at http://www.ccb.nic.in
has been created. Detailed information about AIEEE and Counseling
will shortly be available at this site.
