HIMACHAL PRADESH TOPS IN PROVIDING SANITATION FACILITIES TO URBAN POPULATION

About 60% of the urban population in the country is reported to have access to sewerage and low cost sanitation facilities. Based on the information furnished by different state implementing agencies like Public Health Engineering Departments, Water Supply and Sewerage Boards (as on 31.3.2000), 93% of the urban population in Himachal Pradesh has been provided with sewerage & sanitation facilities. 80% of the urban population in Madhya Pradesh, 79% in Rajasthan and 75 percent in Kerala has been covered, while in Orissa the coverage is only 9%.

Among the union territories entire urban population of Chandigarh and Pondicherry is reported to be covered by sanitation facilities. In case of Andaman & Nicobar islands the coverage is 99%.
