SWEDISH INDUSTRY MINISTER CALLS ON SHRI ARUN SHOURIE


The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and Disinvestment, Shri Arun Shourie held a meeting with the Swedish Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr. Leif Pagrotsky, here today. Shri Shourie gave the visiting dignitary an overview of the developments in the Telecom and IT sectors in the recent times resulting in tremendous growth.

The Swedish delegation raised the issue of level playing field and additional spectrum for cellular services in India. Shri Shourie told the visiting Minister that the existence of an independent regulatory and appellate mechanism ensures transparency and level playing field. Highlighting the commitment of the Government to facilitate rapid growth in the sector, Mr. Shourie mentioned that the Convergence Bill is being pursued and the telecom licences in the converged scenario may be more generic. Regarding additional spectrum, the Indian delegation referred to the usage of spectrum by various Government agencies and said that the Department of Telecom is trying to coordinate the requirements of additional spectrum by cellular operators. Efforts are also being made to relocate some of the existing usages from the concerned frequency bands.

The Swedish Minister evinced interest in investing in Telecom and IT sectors in India. He appreciated the growth in the infrastructure sector and welcomed the policy of the Government that has brought in healthy competition. The 13 member Swedish business delegation includes M.D.of Ericsson India, senior executives from Electrolux and others.
