GANDHI
SMRITI LAUNCHING SERIES OF PROGRAMMES DURING GANDHI JAYANTI WEEK
To commemorate the
133rd birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation,
Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti is launching and organising a
series of programmes during the Gandhi Jayanti week. From facilitating
a ‘shramdan’ by school children, launching of Gandhi Smriti children
corner to organising an youth conclave, Gandhi Smriti aims to
bring people closer to Mahatma Gandhi for promoting better understanding
of the man who spearheaded India’s freedom struggle.
In an endeavor
to provide children of the underprivileged section of the society
skills in computer, pottery, spinning and weaving, Srijan-
the Gandhi Smriti Children’s Corner is being launched on October
1 by the Delhi Lt. Governor. Incidentally, the resource persons
for the pottery, spinning and weaving units would be talented
people from the underprivileged sections of the society whom Gandhi
Smriti is willing to promote. The computer section would be handled
by Team DIPTI, a student’s group working on Information Technology
and Social Development. Besides, he would launch a website on
the 2nd Quit India Movement. To commemorate the 60th
anniversary of the Quit India Movement, Gandhi Smriti had launched
the ‘2nd Quit India Movement: National Mission for
Social Regeneration through Voluntary Action’ across the country
on August 9, 2002. The year long programme aims to promote voluntary
action to fight social evils like violence, intolerance, female
foeticide, environmental degradation etc.
Besides Srijan,
Gandhi Smriti, to provide a platform to talented painters, is
starting ‘Sumana’ – the Gandhi Smriti Art Gallery. To start with
an exhibition of paintings
by the inmates of Tihar Central Jail will be displayed from October
1 till October 31. It would also be inaugurated by the Lt. Governor.
Meanwhile, on
October 1 itself, the Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, Mr.
Jagmohan would be inaugurating ‘Sanmati’ – the Gandhi Smriti Literature
Centre. Besides he would release the Mangolian version of the
book, " Mahatma Gandhi’s Autobiography-Moral Lessons".
An audio CD, "Lead kindly light" having Gandhiji’s favorite
bhajans sung by Ms. Janaki Subramaniam would also be released.
To further support
the inmates, ‘Saksham’ – a counter selling various products like
bakery items, paper bags and other crafts would also start functioning
from the same day. Also Swaraj the Gandhi Smriti Village Industry
Corner would be launched at the Gandhi Smriti. These would be
inaugurated by eminent Gandhian and former Governor Dr. Bhishma
Narain Singh. An on-the-spot painting competition for children
on Gandhi is also being organised on the same day at Gandhi Smriti.
On October 2,
the customary ‘Sarva Dharma Prathana Sabha’ would be organised
at 5, Tees January Marg which would be preceded by patriotic songs
by school children. Meanwhile, Gandhi Smriti would be organising
the third round of inter-school quiz competition on Gandhi at
Gandhi Darshan, Rajghat on October 4. About 110 schools are expected
to participate in the quiz competition.
In an endeavor
to promote voluntary action amongst the youth, Gandhi Smriti is
organising ‘Goonj- the Youth Conclave’ on October 5-6.
It is a follow-up of the ‘2nd Quit India Movement:
national Mission for Social Regeneration through Voluntary Action’.
Panel discussions would be organised on critical social issues
like women: right to birth and life with dignity and security;
hunger and malnutrition: focus on food security; peace, harmony
and an awakened India: wither youth; right to rehabilitation of
the mentally ill: let us not repeat Erwadi; and global warming
and environmental degradation. Plan of youth action would also
be discussed at the conclave. Besides there would be street plays
and documentary shows on related issues.
