SHRI MAHAJAN LEADS HIGH-LEVEL
DELEGATION TO MAURITIUS
FOCUS ON STRENGTHENING
COOPERATION IN COMMUNICATIONS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
In a major move to
give new impetus to E-initiatives in bilateral relations, Union
Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Communications & Information
Technology Shri Pramod Mahajan left on a five-day (September 27th-1st
October, 2002) official visit to Mauritius today. The Minister
is leading a high-level delegation for harnessing cooperation
between the two countries in the field of Telecommunications,
Information Technology and Postal Sectors.
The main objective
of Shri Mahajan’s visit is to identify inputs that would roadmap
bilateral relations in critical areas of information technology,
such as computer software and communications, R&D, institutional
linkages and the postal sector thereby laying foundation for renewed
cooperation in the emerging new knowledge-based economies.
During his visit,
the Minister will have wide ranging discussions with business
leaders and the key principals of the Government of Mauritius.
His meeting with Mr. Deelchand Jeeha, Minister of Information
Technology and Telecommunications, Government of Mauritius, will
focus on cooperation in key areas of information technology and
telecommunications in the light of the experience and expertise
developed by India’s IT professionals. A key feature of Shri Mahajan’s
visit is the inauguration of the School of Advance Computing in
Mauritius with the help of C-DAC. The Minister will also lay the
foundation stone of the Cybercity Project in Mauritius. Both the
countries are also likely to sign a Memorandum of Understanding
in the field of Postal and Telecom Sectors. Shri Pramod Mahajan
will also call on Mr. Karl Auguste Offman, President of the Republic
of Mauritius.
Both India and Mauritius
have an on-going cooperation in the field of Telecom by way of
telecom projects undertaken and successfully executed by the Telecom
Consultants India Limited (TCIL). India’s ICT experts to Mauritius
during 2000-01 stood at US$1170 million and US$600 million in
terms of electronic software and hardware respectively.
