UPGRADATION OF COMPUTER NETWORK
OF FOUR METROPOLITAN HIGH COURTS
The Government in
the Department of Justice has taken up a project for upgraration
of the computer network of the four metropolitan High Courts of
Delhi, Bombay, Madras and Calcutta to the level of the Supreme
Court during the current financial year 2002-2003. A sum of Rs.
19.26 crores has been earmarked for such upgradation. The High
Court of Delhi has been allocated Rs. 4.3 crore, Bombay High Court
Rs. 10.23 crore, Madrs High Court Rs. 5 crore and for the Calcutta
High Court the allocation is under preparation.
The upgradation of
computer network in the four metropolitan High Courts would serve
as a model of computerization for other High Courts. It may be
mentioned that the effective use of information technology in
the Supreme Court helped in bringing down the pendency of cases
from about 1.04 lakhs in 1990-91 to about 22000 in 2001.
The Delhi High Court
has a pendency of 1.78 lakh cases, the Bombay High Court 2.93
lakh cases, the Calcutta High Court 2.82 lakh cases and the Madras
High Court 3.59 lakh cases.
As a sequel to the
upgradation of computerization network in the four metro High
Courts, it has been decided that the Delhi High Court will introduce
an e-court for electronic filing of cases in Intellectual Property
Rights related matters from the next financial year 2003-2004.
The Centre has allocated
Rs. 40 crore for computerization of courts in the Tenth Five Year
Plan.
