ALL INDIA CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR AGRICULTURAL AND RURAL LABOURERS INCREASES


The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural and Rural Labourers (Base 1986-87 = 100) increased during August, 2002 by 3 and 2 points each to stand at 319 for Agricultural Labourers and 321 for Rural Labourers.

In case of Agricultural Labourers, 17 states reflected an increase in indices between 1 to 5 points and 1 State showed decrease of 1 point while the indices in 2 States remained constant.

In the case of Rural Labourers, 17 states reflected increase in indices between 1 to 5 points and one State showed decrease in indices of 2 points while the indices remained constant in 2 states.

Among the States, Assam, Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal experienced sharpest increase of 5 points each in respect of both the series. On the other hand, Tripura recorded maximum decrease of 1 and 2 points respectively for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers.

Meghalaya continued to figure at the top of the index table for both Agricultural and Rural Labourers with 345 and 342 points respectively whereas Manipur remained at the bottom of the index with 295 points for Agricultural Labourers and 296 points for Rural Labourers.

Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL decreased from 2.27 % in July, 2002 to 2.24% in August, 2002. The inflation rate for the CPI-RL also decreased from 2.57% in July, 2002 to 2.23% during August, 2002. Respective rates of inflation during August, 2001 were 1.30% and 1.62%.
