RSP SAVES RS. 20.8 LAKH THROUGH IN- HOUSE INNOVATION

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has made a direct saving of Rs. 20.8 lakhs on account of a creative project conceived and implemented by the employees of Steel Melting Shop-I (SMS-I). The SMS-I collective has recently reconditioned a disordered movable hood for one of its LD converters making it more efficient than a new one. The movable hood is a part of the LD gas cleaning system, which is installed just above the mouth of the converter, through which gas or fumes of the LD are sucked during blowing. The hood is made up of 168 seamless pipes through which water passes continuously at a pressure of about 5.5 kg/cm square, in order to keep the structure cool.

The movable hood was successfully installed in converter Q recently during the scheduled campaign repairs and is working well. This renovated hood is expected to be more efficient and will have a great longevity as compared to the original one. The purchase of a new movable hood would have cost the plant about Rs. 28.95 lakh. But due to the in-house ingenuity of the RSP employees, the hood was developed at an expenditure of only Rs. 8.168 lakhs thereby resulting in a direct saving of Rs. 20.8 lakh. The enthusiastic SMS-I collective is now planning to recondition another old hood that can be used in converter P next year.
