CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR AUGUST, 2002;

BASE 1984-85=100


The All India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI(UNME)), on base 1984-85=100, for the month of August, 2002 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All India CPI (UNME) for August 2002 is 407, which is 1 point more than the index for the month of July, 2002. At the major group level, the index for "Miscellaneous" has increased by 0.49% in August 2002 over the last month. At the sub-group level, the index for "Oils & Fats" has increased by 3.85% followed by "Vegetables" the index of which has increased by 2.16%; however, the index for "Fruits" has decreased by 6.16%. With the corresponding All India index for August 2001 being 393, the index for the month of August, 2002 has shown a rise of 3.6 percent over a year.

The average index for the period April 2002 to July 2002 works out to 402, which is higher by 4.1% over the average index of 386 for the corresponding period of the previous year.

Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for August 2002; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for August, 2002 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for August, 2001 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI (UNME) for Septembert, 2002 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely September, 2001. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from – 1.3 to 8.4 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Tiruchirapalli and the decrease in the case of Imphal. The increases are less than 0 for 1centre, 0.1 to 2.0 percent for 7 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 23centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 19 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 8 centres and 8.1 to 10.0 percent for 1 centre. As many as 31 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All India figure of 4.1 percent and 28 centres have higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India average. In the remaining 1centre,the percent increase equals the All-India average.
