MAHARSHI PARASHURAM DEDICATED TO THE NATION

93,000 DWT Double Hull Tanker, "Maharshi Parashuram", was dedicated to the nation today at Cochin by Hon’ble Shri Ved Prakash P. Goyal, Union Minister of Shipping. The total cost of the vessel is Rs. 190 crores.

The contract for ‘the vessel was effected on 22nd July, 2000 and the keel laid in September 2000. The construction time taken for the vessel is the shortest as compared to similar vessels constructed earlier at Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL). The Shortest ever delivery period could be achieved through concerted efforts in streamlining purchase procedures and augmentation of facilities to reduce bottlenecks in production.

The 237m long "Maharshi Parashuram" has 10 cargo tanks with a capacity to carry 1 lakh cubic metre of crude oil and eight water ballast tanks for carrying 36,000 cubic metre of sea water. The ship is fitted with a 14,900 HP engine to attain a service speed of 14.5.

Sustained marketing efforts by CSL to make an entry into the export market, has finally been rewarded with the receipt of an order from National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC), Abu Dhabi, for the construction of an Ocean going Cargo launch Vessel. The Vessel is 130 M long with a breadth of 40 M and depth of 9M. The work involves fabricating and erection of aprox. 7,000 tonnes of steel, ballast pump of 10,000 m3/hr. capacity and connected piping work. The yard is aiming to complete its first export order within the scheduled delivery date.

CSL has also finalized the specifications for construction of two Aframax tankers for SCI. These vessels of 1,10,000 DWT are the largest to be built in the yard. The Cochin Shipyard could net a pretax profit of Rs. 27.59 crores, and wipe off the entire accumulated losses.
