The National Rail Vikas Yojana (NRVY) includes four areas – strengthening of Golden Quadrilateral, strengthening of Rail connectivity to Ports, construction of four Mega Bridges and accelerated completion of Last Mile and other important projects. Certain projects, covered under strengthening of Golden Quadrilateral and construction of Mega Bridges, are already sanctioned. The outlay for these sanctioned works for the year 2002-03 is Rs.387.05 crores. The projects for strengthening of port connectivity are under finalization. The additional Rs.763 crores during 2002-03, indicated in the NRVY for Accelerated Completion of Last Mile and other projects is presently under discussion with the Ministry of Finance.

Modernization of existing infrastructure is a continuous process on Indian Railways. Modernisation covers electric and diesel locomotives, coaches, wagons, track as well as signaling and telecommunication installations. It includes induction of high powered diesel/electric locomotives, high axle load wagons, modernization of track as well as of track maintenance, track circuiting, provision of Route Relay Interlocking/Solid State Interlocking, Auxiliary Warning System, Walkie-talkie communication between guard and driver, provision of optic fibre based communication systems, interlocking and telephone at level crossings.
