SAFEGUARDS FOR GHUMANTU ADIVASIS

LOK SABHA

The denotified and nomadic tribes have been categorised as Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Tribes etc. based on their socio-economic conditions in the respective States and Union Territories.

Though there is no specific earmarking of funds exclusively under the category of denotified tribes but they are entitled to benefits/concessions available under various schemes of the Government in accordance with their categorisation as Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes and Scheduled Tribes as the case may be.

This information was given by the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual Oram in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today in respect of a news item published ‘Hakon ke mohtaj karoraun adivasi ghumantu’ in the Rasthriya Sahara dated September 1, 2002 alleging that the so called cultured society treat the denotified and Ghumantu tribes as criminals and the Government do not provide any budgetary provisions and extend them the rights enshrined in the Constitution.
