FACILITIES TO COAST GUARD

LOK SABHA

The augmentation of facilities in Coast Guard is an on-going process. A proposal to set up 10 new Boat Stations in a phased manner is being processed. The places tentatively selected are Vadinar (Gujarat), Jafarabad or Pipavav (Gujarat), Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), Bhatkal or Malpe (Karnataka), Beypore (Kerala) and Kavaratti in Lakshadeep in the Western Coast, Kakinda (Andhra Pradesh), Gopalpur (Orissa) and Pondhicherry in the Eastern Coast and Kamorta in Andaman & Nicobar.

Modernisation and development of Coast Guard is dictated primarily by the threat perceptions as also the emerging technologies. There are proposals to acquire ships/aircraft for the Coast Guard during 2002-03 for which a sum of Rs 271.40 crore has been earmarked. The proposals, after examination would be accorded approval, if considered appropriate. It may not be possible to indicate the details of these proposals as some of them may not be considered appropriate for according approval after examination.

This information was given by the Defence Minister Shri George Fernandes in a written reply to Shri Bhupendrasinh Solanki and Shri Ramdas Athawale in Lok Sabha today.
