NO SIGNIFICANT
CHANGE IN EMPLOYMENT SCENARIO SINCE 1996

Employment in Public
and Private organised sector has not registered any significant
change over the years since 1996. This was stated by the Minister
of State for Labour Shri Ashok Pradhan in a written reply in the
Rajya Sabha today. Shri Pradhan said that total employment in
the organised sector was 279.86 lakh in 1995 while in the year
2000 it was 279.60 lakh. He said in case of Public sector the
employment which was 196.89 lakh in 1995 witnessed a very marginal
decrease to 193.14 lakh in 2000. However, in private sector employment
saw a marginal increase from 82.97 lakh in 1995 to 86.46 lakh
in 2000.
In another written
reply, the Minister said that 3.69 lakh employees of the Central
Public Sector Undertakiing sought voluntary Retirement between
October 1988 to 31-3-2001. He said that according to information
collected by the Labour Bureau, the number of persons affected
between 1991 and 2001 were 0.32 lakh due to retrenchment, 1.76
lakh because of closure and 6.33 lakh on account of lay offs.
