GOLDEN JUBILEE OF HANDICRAFTS RESURGENCE IN
INDIA
PRESIDENT TO HONOUR "SHILP
GURUS"
The President, Dr. A.P. J. Abdul Kalam will inaugurate
the commemorative function of the Golden Jubilee of "Handicrafts
Resurgence in India" on November 15, 2002. The function is
being organised by the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts
of the Ministry of Textiles in coordination with the Export Promotion
Council for handicrafts and Craft Council of India.
The President will honour 10 selected eminent
craft persons as ‘Shilp Gurus’ for their exemplary conviction
and dedication which put the handicrafts sector on the path of
resurgence. The names of the selected craft persons for ‘Shilp
Guru’ honour are Shri C. Parmeshwara Char (Karnataka) for
wood carving; Shri V. Ganapathi Sthapathi (Tamil Nadu) for stone
carving; Shri Gurappa Chetty (Andhra Pradesh) for kalamkari; Shri
Jivya Soma Mashe (Maharashtra) for warli painting; Shri Vinayak
Saalvi (Gujarat) for patola; Shri Kirpal Singh Shekhawat (Rajasthan)
for ceramics; Smt. Sona Bai Rajwar (Chhatisgarh) for clay relief
work; Shri Nawang Tsering(Leh, J&K) for clay sculpture; Shri
Jai Dev Baghel (Chhatisgarh) for dhokra; and Shri Jagdish Lal
Soni (Rajasthan) for thewa. Two Monographs on the lifetime achievement
of distinguished crafts persons will be presented to the President.
These would be on Shri V. Ganapathi Sthapathi by Ms. Sabitha Radhakrishna
and on Late Shri Ali Hasan Naqshbandh by Dr. Anjan Chakravarty.
A set of four commemorative Postage Stamps on
"Handicrafts of India" will be released by the President
during the function. Dr. Kalam will also view the display of crafts
items of the ‘Shilp Gurus’ along with the contemporary
Innovative Designs developed recently by the office of the Development
Commissioner, (Handicrafts).
A seminar-cum-exhibition of ‘Shilp Gurus’
and young masters will be held during November 16 to 18, 2002
at the India International Centre, New Delhi. The event will be
inaugurated by the Minister of Textiles, Shri Kashiram Rana.
