VICE PRESIDENT RELEASES BOOK ON JP

The Vice President Shri Krishna Kant has released the biography of Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan at a function here today. Brought out by Publications Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the book is a tribute to the great leader in his birth centenary year. Releasing the book, Shri Krishna Kant said that Jaiprakash Narayan was a natural leader. It is the natural leadership only that attracts natural public support. He said the complexities of modern politics creates wedge between leadership and the people. This might get short-term success but creates barriers.

The Home Minister Shri L.K.Advani who was presiding over the function said that by remembering JP we assert our commitment to democracy. The freedom of expression is most essential for enduring a democratic system, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Smt. Sushma Swaraj said that JP’s movement of ‘Sampoorna Kranti’ was aimed at the change of system and not for political change. Recalling her association with JP, Smt. Swaraj said that his advice was ‘to treat political power as an opportunity to serve’.

The author, Shri Shailendra Nath Shrivastava, who is a former Member of Parliament and was closely associated with JP’s movement said that had there been no JP there would have been no democracy in India today. He said JP staked his life for the sake of democracy. The new generation which has not known JP and his times, would be able to know him through this book, he said.

It is almost 30 years since the country woke up to Jayprakash Narayan’s call for ‘Total Revolution’. "Sampoorna Kranti ab nara hai, Bhavi itihaas hamara hai"; during the mid-seventies, this slogan drew millions out on the streets rallying behind the ‘Loknayak’ in what is also known as our second war for independence. JP’s life was a life of crusades. First it was the freedom movement – he was one of the leading lights of the Quit India Movement – then came a long spell of his association with movements like ‘Bhoodan’ and ‘Sarvodaya’ and finally the tumultuous phase of the nineteen seventies which was a testing time for the Indian democracy. This book gives an insight into the various phases of this crusade. It is part of Publications Division’s Builders of Modern India Series, which includes biographies of important Indian leaders, who have contributed to the building of modern India.
