STATUS OF MEDICAL & DENTAL COLLEGES FOR ADMISSION IN MBBS/BDS

The Government has decided to make public the status of medical/dental colleges all over the country regarding their eligibility to admit students during a particular academic session. This has been done to put an end to the exploitation of students to the detriment of their careers and prospects and also to prevent ill trained doctors in the society.

About 76 medical and dental colleges across the country may not be in a position to take admissions during the year 2002-2003 for want of renewal of permission from the Central Government as per the regulations of Medical Council of India (MCI)/Dental Council of India (DCI). The intake capacity for admitting students would stand reduced by 2000 students in medical side and about 3000 students in dental colleges.

Since, this information was unavailable to the students, some unscrupulous college authorities exploited the ignorance of the students for their own benefit. The State Governments/Universities have been advised to seek the status of permission/renewal of permission from the Central Government before including the medical/dental colleges under their respective jurisdiction in the seat matrix and allotment of students. A statement containing the status of medical/dental colleges for the purpose of admitting students during 2002-2003 alongwith intake capacity is given on the Website of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. (http://mohfw.nic.in). The list is being continuously updated.

The Medical Council of India & Dental Council of India were established under the Acts of Parliament with a view to regulate the medical and dental education, profession and ethics thereto. Under both the Acts, 149 medical colleges and 80 dental colleges were established in various parts of the country. In the year 1992, it was observed that there was a mushroom growth of sub-standard colleges in the medical and dental professions and both the Councils were not in a position to contain the growth due

the inadequate infrastructure. In order to check the mushrooming of sub-standard medical/dental colleges in the country, an Ordinance was promulgated on 27th August, 1992 which was later replaced by Medical Council (Amendment) Act and Dentists (Amendment) Act 1993, making it compulsory for any person/authority to seek permission of Central Government prior to establishment of a new medical/dental colleges, starting of higher courses of study and increase of seat capacity. Under this amended Act 41 medical colleges and 70 dental colleges have been granted permission by the Central Government till date, making it a total of 190 medical colleges and 150 dental colleges in the country.
