EXPORTS OF READYMADE GARMENTS INCREASED DURING JANUARY-MAY'2002.


Exports of readymade garments to Restricted Countries during January-May’2002 has gone up by 8.03%. According to the data compiled by Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) the exports of readymade garments during the first 5 months of this calendar year have amounted to 545.0 million Pcs valued at US$ 1838.5 million (Rs. 8962.81 crores). This shows an increase of 8.03% in terms of quantity and 1.11% in terms of value (US$), when compared to the same period of previous year.

Exports of garment of restricted countries garment exports during the month of May-2002 alone have shown an increase of 5.65% in quantity terms and 9.22% in terms of value. When compared to May-2001. Total exports of restricted countries during this month have amounted 119.6 million pcs valued US$ 431.1 million (Rs. 2110.96 crores).

Exports of USA, during January-May’2002 have amounted to 179.2 million pcs valued at US$ 855.5 million (Rs. 4172.45 crores). In comparison to Jan-May’2001, quantity has increased by 24.01% and decrease 0.71% in value (US$).

Exports to E.U., during the period under review have amounted to 333.8 million pcs valued at US$ 894.8 million (Rs. 4360.48 crores). When compared to the same period of last year, there has been shown an increase of 1.61% in quantity and 4.53% in the terms of value (US$). In comparison to the same period of previous year exports to Portugal, Spain, Ireland, U.K., Denmark & Italy have shown an increase while other countries of European Union has shown a decline. Garment export to Portugal has shown the highest increase of 54.55% in terms of value (US$).

Exports to Canada, during January-May’2002 have registered an increase of 1.59% in terms of quantity but a decrease of 12.50% has registered in terms of value (US$). When compared to the same period of previous year. During the period under review, Exports have amounted to 32.0 million pcs valued at US$ 88.2 million (Rs. 429.88 crores).
