PRODUCTION AND EXPORT OF SUGAR
Production of sugar during the current
sugar season 2001- 02 as on March 15, 2002 was 145.01 lakh tonnes
(provisional) as against 140.75 lakh tonnes(provisional) during
the corresponding period of the previous sugar season 2000-01.A
quantity of 2.17 lakh tonnes of sugar was released for April and
2.16 lakh tonnes for May as levy sugar.
During the current financial year
2001-02,upto December,2001,about 11.8 lakh tonnes(provisional)
of sugar has been exported.About five lakh tonnes (provisional)
of sugar is reported to have been physically exported since October
2001 upto May 1, 2002.
The overall price situation of sugar
was stable in April 2002,with the wholesale price ranging between
Rs.1400 and Rs.1580 per quintal. The retail price of sugar ranged
between Rs.14.4 and Rs.17 per kg. in four principal metropolitan
cities of Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai.
