INFLATION
RATE FALLS BUT CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS RISES
The
rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial
Workers continued to witness a downward trend with a further fall
of 0.50 percentage point during June, 2002. It went down from
4.66 % in May, 2002 to 4.16% in June, 2002. In June, 2001 the
inflation rate was 3.39%.
The All India Consumer Price Index
Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for June, 2002 (base 1982-100)
went up by 4 points to stand at 476 (four hundred & seventy
six) points. The CPI-IW during the corresponding period last year
had also increased by six points.
The Fall/Rise in index varied from
centre to centre. In 62 centres, the index increased between 1
to 37 points and in 3 centres it remained constant whereas in
another 5 centres it recorded an decrease of 1 to 6 points when
compared to the previous month.
During the month Quilon centre experienced
the maximum increase of 37 points. The increase is mainly due
to rise in prices of Rice, Tapioca, Fish Fresh, Fish Dry, Onions,
Vegetables & Fruits, Bidi, Medicines etc. On the other hand
Raniganj centre experienced the maximum decrease of 6 points due
to fall in prices of Rice, Wheat, Wheat Flour and Fresh Fish.
The index remained stationery in 3 centres viz. Warangal, Kolkata
and Mariani-Jorhat.
The index in respect of six main
centres for May, 2002 stood at the following level: -
