INCREASE IN NUMBER OF JUDGES OF HIGH COURTS
The Centre has requested
the Chief Justices of all the 21 High Courts in the country to
furnish information on institution and disposal of main cases
during 1997-2001 by July 31, 2002 for a comprehensive review of
the judge strength of the High Courts during the current year.
The review of
judge strength of High Courts is undertaken every three years
with reference to the felt need for disposal of cases, taking
into account, the backlog and expected future filing of cases.
The current total
sanctioned strength of judges of High Courts is 647. The pendency
of cases in the High Courts, at present, is over 36 lakh cases,
which have gone up manifold over the last one decade.
