SETTING UP OF FOOD BANKS

A revised scheme of Grain Banks to provide for periods of natural calamities or during the lean season when rural people do not have purchasing power in areas which are endemic drought prone having large scale migration and calamity oriented, particularly tribal areas is under consideration.

The Agricultural Development strategy for the Ninth Five Year Plan was essentially based on the policy of food security announced by the Government to double food production and make India hunger free in the next ten years. In the inaugural address by the Hon’ble Prime Minister at the National Consultation on "Towards Hunger Free India" in April, 2001 it was resolved to make the mission "Hunger Free India" successful by 2007.

This information was given in the Lok Sabha today by Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri U.V. Krishnam Raju in reply to a question of Dr. (Shrimati) Ch. Suguna Kumari.
