The Steel Authority
of India Ltd. (SAIL), a public sector undertaking of the Ministry
of Steel separated 3,910 workers during July’ 91 to March’ 93
through Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). During the years 1998
and 1999, the number of employees who availed voluntary retirement
was 5,317 and 11,606 respectively. The VR Scheme was not in operation
in the year 2000. SAIL separated 5,321 workers through VRS in
the year 2001. It is considering at present introduction of a
pre-mature retirement scheme for non-executives as such a scheme
for executives is already in existence.
This
information was given by the Minister for Steel Shri B.K.Tripathy
in a written reply to a question of Shri Ramachandra Khuntia,
MP in the Rajya Sabha today.
