TO INCREASE STEEL PRODUCTION
RAJYA SABHA
The production of steel
in the country during the year 2001-02 was 30.61 million tones.
During the first quarter of this fiscal, the production was 7.68
million tonnes (Provisional). The production in the year 2000-01
and1999-2000 was 29.27 million tonnes and 27.17 million tonnes
respectively.
The Government have
taken several steps to increase the production of steel, such
as modernization and expansion of public sector steel plants and
adoption of various policy measures to encourage creation of additional
steel production capacity in the private sector. Indian Steel
Producers have also been taking continuous steps to meet the domestic
requirements of steel including up-gradation of technology, improvement
in productivity and yields, improvement in quality of products
and adoption of the product-mix to suit the requirements of the
consumers.
