APPOINTMENT OF CHIEF JUSTICES TO HIGH COURTS

LOK SABHA

A view has been expressed that the policy of having the Chief Justice of High Court from outside the State had been counter-productive and the Chief Justice should normally not be appointed from outside the State.

The Government is opposed to restoring the earlier practice of appointing the seniormost judge of a High Court as its Chief Justice. There is no such proposal at present.

This information was given by the Union Minister of Law and Justice Shri K. Jana Krishnamurthi in a written reply to a question from Shri Suresh Kurup in the Lok Sabha today.
