PROPOSAL FOR ST STATUS TO BODOS AND KARBIS OF ASSAM

There is a proposal to notify the Lalungs of autonomous districts and the Dimasa, Hajong, Singhpho, Khampti and Garo communities in the plain areas as Scheduled Tribes in relation to the State of Assam. Besides, there is also a proposal to change the name of the Mikir community to Karbi.

The process of consultation with expert agencies on the question of granting ST status to Bodos of autonomous districts and Karbis of plain areas is not yet complete, as per the modalities approved for deciding such claims.

This information was given by the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual Oram in a written reply to a question from Shri Urkhao Gwra Brahma in the Rajya Sabha today.
