NEW TYPE OF VEHICLE REGISTRATION PLATES

The technical specifications of the new High Security Registration Plate, name of the testing agencies authorised to test the plate/grant type approval certificate and the time frame by which the scheme is to be implemented have already been notified by the Government in the Gazette vide GSR 221(E) dated 28th March, 2001; SO 814(E) dated 22nd August, 2001; SO 938 (E) dated 24th September, 2001; SO 1041(E) dated 16th October, 2001 and SO 499(E) dated 9th May, 2002.

The Central Government does not grant license to any manufacturer of such plates. Any prospective manufacturer/vendor would need to get their product approved by the agencies authorised by Central Government. Thereafter, it is for the concerned State Government to select the vendor/vendors. As on 10.7.2002, four companies namely, M/s Shimnit Utsch Pvt. Ltd., M/s Real Industries, M/s Eastern Steel & Saw and M/s Utsav Safety System have got the type approval certificate from the authorised testing agencies and product of some other prospective vendors are under various stages of testing.
