DURAND FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT TO BE INAUGURATED TOMORROW


The Durand Cup Football tournament will be inaugurated by Lt. Gen SS Mehta GoC-in-C Western Command here tomorrow. It is the oldest tournament in India and the second oldest in the world, This tournament was instituted in 1888 and is conducted every year by the Defence Forces. Though initially meant to encourage football within the Services, it has been opened to civilian teams and most of the prominent teams participate in this tournament.

In the preliminary round, played from Dec 26 to Dec 29, two teams of Army i.e. Assam Regimental Centre and Madras Engineering Group have qualified. These teams will compete as part of twelve teams participating in the main tournament.

Winners of the tournament will receive Rs. 4 lacs, Runners Up will get Rs. 2 lacs and the two loser teams in the semi-finals will receive Rs. 1 lac each.
