REDUCTION IN NUMBER OF ORGANISED WORKERS : TOTAL WORKFORCE 39.7 CRORE

As per the Sample Survey carried out by National Sample Survey Organisation during 1999-2000, estimated workforce in the country was 39.7 crore. Stating this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, The Minister of State for Labour Shri Ashok Pradhan said that 13.9% workers were employed as regular salaried persons while 33.2% were engaged as casual staff. He said that as on March 2000, out of a total employment of 2.79 crore in the organised sector, approximately 1.93 crore were employed in the public sector.

In another written reply Shri Pradhan said that as per the Employment Market Information Programme of the Directorate General of Employment & Training, estimated employment in the organised sector which was 281.13 lakh as on March 1999 has marginally gone down to 277.89 lakh in March 2001. He said that the estimated employment in the public sector has also marginally gone down from 194.15 lakh as on March 1999 to 191.38 lakh as on March 2001.
