The Rajiv Gandhi
National Quality Awards, 2001, which have been instituted by the
Bureau of Indian Standards to promote quality in the country,
shall be presented by Shri Sharad Yadav, Minister for Consumer
Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, at Vigyan Bhawan, tomorrow.
The Rajiv Gandhi
National Quality Awards have been designed by BIS to be in line
with similar awards of advanced countries, like the Malcolm Baldrige
National Quality Awards, USA; Deming Prize in Japan and the European
Quality Award. It is based on the Total Quality Management model.
The assessment of the applicants for this prestigious award is
done by the National Awards Committee chaired by the Secretary,
Department of Consumer Affairs.
The scheme provides
for four separate awards for large scale manufacturing units,
small scale manufacturing units, service sector and the BEST OF
ALL Award. Commendation Certificates are presented to small and
large units in different sectors like Metallurgical, Electrical,
Electronics, Chemicals, Food, Drugs and Textile. Among the notable
winners in the past have been units of Larsen and Toubro, ITC,
Tata Bearings, Wipro Ltd, Amul and Tata Cummins.
