LOK SABHA
Employees Provident
Fund Organisation is in the process of allotting a unique Social
Security Number (SSN) to its members. The Social Security Number
will be based on unique features of the worker and will have biometric
details. The SSN will be unique and permanent for each member.
This will facilitate the identification, settlement of claim,
etc. independent of the employer. The SSN is a 14 all digits number,
which will allow to maintain complete details of the members such
as name, age, parental details, photographs and finger prints
in the database. The Minister of State for Labour Shri Ashok Pradhan
stated this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today. In another
reply the Minister stated that the Central Board of Trustees (Employees’
Provident Fund), which is a tripartite body, in its 158th
meeting held on 2.10.2002 has, in principle, approved the launching
of a Housing Scheme for subscribers of Employees’ Provident Fund.
A committee has been constituted consisting of representatives
of employers, employees and senior officials of Employees’ Provident
Fund Organization under the Chairmanship of Shri S. Gopalan, former
Labour Secretary, Government of India. The committee is studying
the feasibility aspects of the implementation of the scheme.
