PM INAUGURATES INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON
ENERGY CONSERVATION
The Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari
Vajpayee has called on all Govt. organisations to reduce their
energy consumption by 30 per cent in the next five years. He also
urged all Ministries and Departments and PSUs to provide information
on the steps taken towards this goal in their Annual Reports.
The Prime Minister was addressing a two day International Conference
on Strategies for Energy Conservation in the New Millennium jointly
organised by the Ministry of Power and FICCI.
Shri Vajpayee announced that the
President Shri A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has agreed to an energy audit
being carried out at the Rashtrapati Bhawan with a view to implementing
energy conservation measures. Similar energy audits of the North
and South Blocks of the Central Secretariat would also be carried
out. He called upon the CMs of all States and UTs to similarly
implement energy conservation measures required under the Energy
Conservation Act in all State Government and Municipal establishments.
He asked the private sector to bring about energy saving of 20
per cent over the next five years.
Power Minister Shri Suresh Prabhu
in his address said that people’s attitude and mindset has to
change to bring about increased energy conservation. He said that
energy conservation was the need of the hour. Smt. Jayawanti Mehta,
Minister of State for Power said top management of industry should
encourage energy conservation by declaring Energy Management Policy.
This would greatly help the energy conservation movement.
The two-day Conference is attended
by Chief Ministers, Power Ministers of many States and experts
from India and abroad. There are five sessions devoted to various
aspects of energy conservation.
