ALL INDIA CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR AGRICULTURAL AND RURAL LABOURERS INCREASES


The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural and Rural Labourers (Base 1986-87 = 100) increased during July, 2002 by 2 points each to stand at 316 for Agricultural Labourers and 319 for Rural Labourers.

In case of Agricultural Labourers, 17 states reflected an increase in indices between 1 to 5 points and 3 States showed decrease of 3 points each.

In the case of Rural Labourers, 15 states reflected increase in indices between 1 to 5 points and 3 states showed decrease in indices between 2 to 3 points while the indices remained constant in 2 states.

Among the states, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in case of Agricultural labourers and Gujarat, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in respect of Rural Labourers experienced sharpest increase of 5 points each. On the other hand Himachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya in respect of Agricultural Labourers and Himachal Pradesh and Meghalaya in case of Rural Labourers recorded a maximum decrease of 3 points each.

Meghalaya continued to figure at the top of the index table for both Agricultural and Rural Labourers with 341 and 338 points respectively whereas Bihar including Jharkhand remained at the bottom with 293 points for Agricultural Labourers and 295 points for Rural Labourers.

Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL decreased from 2.61 % in June , 2002 to 2.27% in July, 2002. The inflation rate for the CPI-RL also decreased from 2.59% in June, 2002 to 2.57 % during July, 2002. Respective rates of inflation during July, 2001 were (-) 0.32% and 0.00%.
