STEPS TO ENHANCE EFFICIENCY OF VIZAG STEEL PLANT


The Vizag Steel Plant (VSP) of the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. (RINL) has improved its production from 2.25 million tonnes in 1997-98 to 2.757 million tonnes of saleable steel in 2001-02. It has produced 3.083 million tonnes of liquid steel during 2001-02 in spite of the general recession in the steel sector. The Company was able to reduce its cumulative net loss to Rs.125 crore in 2001-02 from Rs.291 crore in 2000-01.

The Steel Ministry has taken a number of steps to further enhance productivity and efficiency of the plant. The 4th Coke oven battery is being commissioned to keep the plant run throughout the year. The plant is optimising blowing regime in basic oxygen converters for enhancing life of the refractory lining as well as converter productivity. Heat recovery system in sinter machine has been introduced for energy saving. The modification of cooling stage, controlling cooling paratmeters and roll stock temperatures have been undertaken to enhance rolling mills productivity. The number of outlets in terms of consignment sales agents and extension counters have been increased to enhance sale.

The company has set a target of sales turnover amounting to Rs.4217 crore for the year 2002-03, which includes Rs.450 crore as exports.
