STANDING COMMITTEE ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INVITES SUGGESTIONS
ON INDIAN POST OFFICE(AMENDMENT) BILL, 2002
The Indian Post Office (Amendment)
Bill, 2002 as introduced in Lok Sabha on 17 May, 2002, has been
referred to Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology
headed by Shri Somnath Chatterjee, M.P. for examination and report
to the Parliament. The text of the Bill as introduced in Parliament
is available at website http://parliamentofindia.nic.in/
on internet. The Bill intends to bring about some major amendments
in the Indian Post Office Act, 1898, which seek inter-alia to
vest the Central Government with powers to grant registration
to couriers for operation of services and ensure level playing
field for all players in the communication segment, empower the
Department of Posts to introduce e-enabled services, prescribe
manner of delivery in multi-storeyed complexes to make the service
cost effective and to make existing penal provisions in the IPO
Act more stringent. The Committee has decided to invite memoranda
on the Bill from the public in general and experts/professional,
organisations/associations interested on the subject matter in
particular.
All those interested in the subject
under consideration may send the Memoranda to Shri S.K. Sharma,
Deputy Secretary, Lok Sabha Secretariat (Room No.606-A), Parliament
House Annexe, New Delhi-110 001, Fax No.3010756 by 27th
August, 2002.
The memoranda which might be submitted
to the Committee would form part of the records of the Committee
and would be treated as strictly confidential and would not be
circulated by anyone, as such an act would constitute a breach
of privilege of the Committee.
Those who are desirous of giving
oral evidence before the Committee, besides sending memoranda,
are requested to intimate to this effect to the Lok Sabha Secretariat
for consideration of the Committee.
