Subject: Quick Estimates
of Index of Industrial Production and Use-based Index (Base 1993-94=100)
for the month of June, 2002.
The Quick Estimates
of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for
the month of June, 2002 have been released by the Central Statistical
Organisation. The General Index stands at 165.4 which is higher
by 4.0% as compared to the month of June, 2001.
2. The
Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing
and Electricity sectors for the month of June, 2002 stand at 131.1,
171.1, and 156.1 respectively, with the corresponding growths
of 9.1%, 3.6% and 3.5% as compared to June, 2001. The cumulative
growths during April-June, 2002-03 over the corresponding period
of 2001-02 in the three sectors have been 7.6%, 3.7% and 3.6%
respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being
4.0%.
3. Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP
for June, 2002, the indices for May, 2002 have undergone the first
revision and those for March, 2002 have undergone the second (final)
revision based upon the updated data received from the source agencies.
The time-series indices of mining sector from April 2000 onwards
have been revised by the Indian Bureau of Mines Nagpur, after exclusion
of production of gold received from Indo Gulf Corporation Ltd as
the same is now not being considered as Mining activity. The Press
Note on Quick Estimates of IIP for June 2002 also incorporates the
revised time-series indices of mining sector. Taking into account
updated production data and exclusion of above item, the final index
of mining sector for March' 2002 has undergone downward revision
of 1.7%. There are no significant revisions in the indices of manufacturing
and electricity sectors for March 2002 and the sectoral as well
as general indices for May '2002.
4. Ten out of seventeen
two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the
month of June, 2002 as compared to the corresponding month of
the previous year. Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel)
have shown the highest growth of 23.8% followed by 15.8% in Beverages,
Tobacco and Related Products, and 10.5% in Jute and Other Vegetable
Fibre Textiles (except cotton). On the other hand, Wool Silk and
Man-Made Fibre Textiles have shown a growth of (-)17.0% followed
by a growth of (-)5.1% in Metal Products and Parts, except Machinery
and Equipment and (-)4.4% in Cotton Textiles.
5. As per Use-based
classification, the growth in June, 2002 as compared to June,
2001 is 5.8% in Basic goods, 5.4% in Capital goods and 2.1% in
Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables
have recorded growth of (-)4.5% and 6.5% respectively, with the
overall growth in Consumer goods being 3.5%.
6. Statements
giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at
Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification
(NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of June,
2002 alongwith the growth rates over the corresponding month of
previous year including the cumulative indices and growth rates
are enclosed.
