REPORT
OF NATIONAL LABOUR COMMISSION TO BE REVIEWED IN CONSULTATION WITH
SOCIAL PARTNERS, SAYS LABOUR MINISTER
The
Labour Minister, Dr. Sahib Singh has said that the government
will undertake labour reforms to have harmonious industrial relations.
He was speaking at a function after inaugurating the building
complex of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee Institute of Social Security
Administration at Faridabad in Haryana today. He said that labour
reforms will aim at ending exploitation of workers and create
an atmosphere for investment. Dr. sahib Singh said that the Report
of the Second National Commission on Labour will be reviewed for
this purpose in consultation with trade unions and employees’
organisations. Complementing Haryana for having no labour unrest,
the Labour Minister said that this is one of the major reason
for the state having highest growth rate in northern India. Responding
to Haryana Chief Minister, Shri Om Prakash Chautala’s request,
Dr. Sahib Singh said that the Labour Ministry would construct
houses for workers, provided the state government provides land.
Shri Chautala was the Chief Guest at the function. The Labour
Minister said that several amendments to the Employees Provident
Fund (EPF) Act are on the anvil to bring in more workers particularly
from the unorganised sector within the social security net. He
said that the EPF Organisation is undertaking a major modernisation
programme. He said both these actions would need an adequate trained
man power and inauguration of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee Institute
of Social Administration signifies a very major step in this direction.
The Labour Minister expressed hope that the institute would address
to the long term skill needs and managerial capabilities of more
than 19 thousand employees of the EPFO. He urged the EPFO to enhance
its customer satisfaction level. Dr. Sahib Singh particularly
expressed concern about the settlement of claims in cases of unfortunate
death of workers in harness. He instructed the EPFO to settle
such claims with utmost priority and said that the Ministry should
be kept posted about progress in such cases.

spread over 2.23 acres of land has been constructed at a cost
of over Rs.4.23 crore.
