ALLOCATION OF VACANCIES

LOK SABHA

In the Air Force and the Navy, recruitment is done on all India merit basis and vacancies are not allocated State-wise. However, in the Army, Fixed Class vacancies are allocated as per the fixed class share of the State based on the demographic profile and the all India all class vacancies are allocated as per the Recruitable Male Population of the particular State. There is no specific quota for any State as these vacancies vary from year to year based on the wastage rate and new raisings.

There has been no problem in getting adequate number of candidates for enrolment as Personnel Below Officer Rank in Army, Sailors in Navy and Airmen in the Air Force. However, some problems are being faced in getting candidates of desired calibre in adequate numbers for the Officer ranks in all the three Services.

To improve the intake of Officers, the recruiting activities and service profile of Officers etc are being given wide publicity through media-advertisements, internet and other modes of public contact. Results of these moves have been encouraging.

The approximate number of vacancies, including Officers, likely to be filled up in the three Services are 96,503 in the Army, 4,000 in the Navy and 4,965 in the Air Force.

This information was given by the Defence Minister Shri George Fernandes in a written reply to Shri TTV Dhinakaran, Shri TM Selvaganapathi and Shri Trilochan Kanungo in Lok Sabha today.
