SEAT BELTS TO BE BROUGHT UNDER MANDATORY CERTIFICATION BY OCTOBER
Seat belts will be
brought under mandatory certification by Bureau of Indian Standards
by October 2002. Steps are also being taken to introduce voluntary
quality certification on sugar by the Bureau; said Shri K.M. Sahni,
Director General, Bureau of Indian Standards while speaking on
the occasion of presentation of Rajiv Gandhi National Quality
Awards, 2000 here today.
Tata International
Limited, Dewas, manufacturers of finished leather and leather
products won the `Best of All’ Award for 2000 while CG Newage
Electrical Limited Ahmedabad was adjudged the winner for large
scale manufacturing industrial sector. Polytrusions Private Limited,
Chennai won the quality award 2000 for small scale manufacturing
industry and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Northern Region,
Noida was given Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award, 2000 for
service sector. Commendation certificates were also issued under
large scale, small scale and service sector units selected from
about 400 applicants. These include Grasim Industries Limited,
Jodhpur; BPL Engineering Limited, Bangalore; Larsen and Toubro
Limited, Chennai; Mother Diary, Gandhi Nagar; Birla Cellulosic,
Bharuch; Sharp Pumps Private Limited, Coimbatore; Chordia Food
Products Limited, Pune and IOC Salaya-Mathura
Pipeline, Rajkot.
Distributing the awards
to the winners, Shri Shanta Kumar, Minister of Consumer Affairs,
Food and Public Distribution said that the Bureau of Indian Standards
had formulated 17676 standards out of which 133 were mandatory.
It also has 16038 licensees who are authorized to use the ISI
mark. During the last three years, nearly 1000 standards have
been formulated and 6000 new licensees have joined the fold. The
Bureau has more than 425 licensees for packaged drinking water.
The Minister reiterated the efforts of the Bureau in introducing
gold hallmarking scheme after testing the purity of samples of
jewellery being sold by established jewellers in various metropolitan
cities.
In his presidential
address Shri V. Sreenivasa Prasad, Minister of State for Consumer
Affairs, Food and Public Distribution called upon the industry
to accelerate its efforts for achieving excellence in total quality
so that our products and services would attract due recognition
in world market.
Shri
Ashok Pradhan, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and
Public Distribution said that in the fast changing technological
scenario, it had become necessary for organisations to continuously
review, improve and upgrade the quality of their products and
services at minimum cost.
Shri S. Bandopadhyay,
Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs and Chairman, National
Awards Committee underlined the need for large organised consumers
to emphasise on quality at minimum cost.
The Rajiv Gandhi National
Quality Awards have been designed by BIS to be in line with similar
awards of advanced countries like the Malcolm Baldrige National
Quality Award, USA; Deming Prize in Japan and the European Quality
Award. It is based on the Total Quality Management model. The
winners are selected by the National Awards Committee chaired
by Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs.
